Bio-rewable fuel additive for diesel/kerosene reduce emissions

The furfural molecule has a very high oxygen content. In addition, its derivatives are known to change the phase diagram of (e.g. diesel), so that mineral diesel can be blended e.g. with alcohols without forming emulsions. Already in earlier work and field trials , such additives have successfully reduced diesel emissions or suppressed e.g. the vapour pressure so ethanol-gasoline mixtures did not separate! The attached patent falls into this category of chemistry.

Researchers have demonstrated how to convert furfural into a high-quality petroleum refinery feedstock.

The principles for converting the furfural are shown in the above block flow diagram, using a four-step catalytic process:

  1. furfural (FAF) to furfural–acetone (2:1) dimer (i.e. the aldol condensation product of furfural and acetone),
  2. Oli – oligomeric adducts formed by Michael addition reactions,
  3. H-FAF – hydrogenated furfural–acetone (2:1) dimer,
  4. Cyc – cyclic compounds formed by hydrogenation and Diels–Alder reactions.

Cellulosic Ethanol (Pre-treatment): The “BBS” plug-in removes the pentosans (C 5 -components), which partially poisen yeasts (see picture). BBS improves Cellulosic Ethanol Processes (dalinyebo.com/bbs)

Therefore, when “BBS” is plugged-in as part of the lignocellulose pre-treatment stage, it will improve the quality of the biomass for enzymatic conversion, reducing operating costs/improving conversion yields.
